Located in the northwestern area of the Sierra of Tramuntana, Deia is the fifth smallest town of the island of Mallorca. Deia has a surface area of 15.11 square kilometers and as of 2004, it has a small reported population of less than a thousand inhabitants. However, tourists constantly boost up the town s population every now and then.
Deia (also known as Deya ) is a cheerful community with an amalgamation of legitimate local inhabitants and tourists amidst natural splendor and well preserved edifices. Although the buildings were constructed way before there were professional architects to have exact measurements of everything, the people simply must be commended for a terrific job. The locals were not hindered by inadequacy of materials, instead, they just made something grand out of the local resources, until they were able to come up with ideal abodes that go harmoniously with the scenery. Of course, the breathtaking sierra range serves as a perfect backdrop to the village.
Downward a dusty roadway, through the olive groves, lies the 'cala' or the cove. This vicinity can be reached by car, but a nice walk to pass the time away may be a better option. This is also where a small number of lingering fishermen still go out at dawn to cast their nets and make a living.
The locals of Deia are used to having strangers or visitors around. This village has long been a favorite refuge for artists, musicians and writers since the early 20th century. This place is simply a wealth of natural bounty that will easily make anyone inspired to come up with masterpieces in any form or medium. It is not even a wonder why many of these visiting artists make Deia as their permanent dwelling place.
In Deia , there are a number of little shops, more than a few restaurants, and good hotels. It is not unusual for five star luxury accommodations to be in close proximity with local bars. There is also a selection of good rental properties available to the visitors. Not to be forgotten is the fast growing real estate industry in Deia -- more and more people are opting to look for permanent residences in this beautiful picture-perfect place. See for yourself, and in no time, you ll surely fall in love with Deia!
